Never Be Boring.

I'll admit, this seems obvious. And yet, if this can be used as your mantra as you're rewriting, it can be a handy bit of advice. I've seen enough plays to know "don't be boring" is harder than it sounds. We all fall in love with bits of our writing for all kinds of reasons, and forget about the audience. There's all kinds of writing that taken in isolation might be good, but not dramatic, or compelling, or meaningful to a story. Another way to think of this is self-indulgent.
